Falls & Fracture Prevention in Central Lancashire
Welcome to the Falls and Fracture Prevention website for Central Lancashire.The aim of this website is two fold:
- To increase awareness of falls & fracture prevention measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of injury and loss of independence.
- To provide a resource for both older people, their families, friends, carers and health and social care practitioners about local services related to the prevention of falls and promotion of wellbeing and independence.
Falls are a major cause of disability and the leading cause of death in older people over the age of 75 years. Most falls do not cause injuries but can cause self imposed restriction of activity, social isolation and a fear of falling again.1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will suffer a fall each year, increasing to 1 in 2 men and women over the age of 85 years.
In Central Lancashire it is predicted 16,256 falls will occur in one year in the over 65 and above year age group.10 % of these falls will lead to fracture and 20% will require medical attention.
If you have had a fall in the last 12 months, especially if you have sustained an injury and are experiencing lack of confidence, some unsteadiness when walking or moving around, then read on.
Falls are not an inevitable part of growing older and by obtaining the right advice and information there are lots of measures that can be taken to promote healthy ageing.
